This is also reflected in the 2025 Business Succession Report published by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. According to this survey, business succession is emerging as one of the most significant structural challenges facing German SMEs. More and more entrepreneurs want to hand over their businesses or are forced to step down due to age or the demands of the role – whilst suitable successors are often lacking. Since 2019, the gap between available businesses and suitable prospective successors has almost doubled. The DIHK report states that around 5,620 businesses in Germany have no prospective successor.
